Rate My Administrator

Updated: Feb 4, 2019

Just in case you were thinking that the CSU would finally start prioritizing new faculty hires and the needs of students after the end of the recession, think again. This article from the LA Times in 2017 about a state audit of the CSU puts paid to that notion:

The audit, with the catchy title "California State University: Stronger Oversight is Needed for Hiring and Compensating Management Personnel and for Monitoring Campus Budgets", lays out some pretty gross facts. Here are a few highlights:

  1. Management grew by 15% between 2008 and 2016, while faculty and support staff grew less than half that.

  2. Where's Rate My Administrator when you need it? Cal Poly San Luis Obispo increased pay for 70 administrators with either outdated performance evaluations or no evaluations at all!

  3. Most of the campuses had ZERO monitoring of their budgets. That means when they say they have to cut your college budget by 20% and can't hire faculty, they have no idea what they are talking about.

You can read this audit yourself at this link:

Keep all this in mind when your administrators tell you that:

  1. They cannot raise TA stipends.

  2. Your departmental budget is seriously in the red.

  3. They cannot hire any more faculty or staff.

  4. There are no start-up funds.
